Someone Else’s Way? Or Your Way?

If you’re a service-entrepreneur, you’re bombarded by it every day…

“THIS is the sales strategy to make your business work!”

“You just need THIS email funnel to convert your leads!”

“This is the launch process that will work for you!”

The problem is, none of these people know your business, know who your leads are and know what will work for you. WHY? Because they never asked you.

It’s happened to me. And it continues to happen daily. And it would be great if these providers (some of them being quite respected coaches) would start asking the questions, but they’re not. So it’s up to you to do the asking.

At the end of the day, you get to decide. Do you want to run your business the way someone else - who doesn’t know you - says you should? Or, do you want to run it your way?

Let’s look at the pros and cons.

Someone Else’s Way - PROS

The biggest, and honestly ONLY, pro for this in my opinion, is that they process is tried and tested. Someone else has made it work. So, if you were identical in experience and personality with that person, maybe you can make it work too.

And sometimes, someone else’s way can be cheap. Only $37 for this email funnel, or $49 for a year’s worth of social media posts.

Someone Else’s Way - CONS

With regards to PRO #1 above, the problem is, you’re NOT exactly like that person. In personality OR experience. Your personal brand is unique, so whether or not you’ve done any work to get clarity on what it is, the likelihood that it will work out exactly the same is slim to none. And then, when you leave the script, they have no support for you.

And when it comes to the price, if someone is selling you their FULL way, it can be thousands of dollars. This isn’t a simple, “I’ll give my Starbucks up for a month” decision. Often, it’s the ONE investment you can make in your business.

But here’s the biggest CON of all…they don’t seem to care if it works for you. If you can’t make it work, then you have tried enough, or you just need to choose a different business structure or offer. They have their money, and that’s all that matters.

Your Way - CONS

The biggest CON when it comes to doing it your own way is…how do you know how to do that? There is so much information out there, how can you weed through it all to figure out what you want to do?

And even then, you try things that don’t work for you. And then you’re right back where you started.

Another con is that you can feel very lonely on your path. There are definitely ways to battle this, but even those with a really strong personal brand feel alone sometimes.

Your Way - PROS

When it comes to the pros of doing things your way:

  1. You stand out from the crowd.

  2. You don’t have to do any activities that feel inauthentic.

  3. You learn what works for you, and change what doesn’t.

  4. You get to have your own voice, instead of being a clone of someone else.

  5. You finally feel like you can do YOU.

  6. You get to own your success 100%.

In Summary

In my opinion, it really comes down to asking yourself this question:

Do you want to show up as your unique self, or not?

I would love to tell you that you can sign up to any program and they will teach you their content while respecting your personal brand. But they are few and far between. And once people get big enough, they get so far removed from their program participants, it’s more about the dollars than the people. They can teach you exactly how THEY got to 6 or 7 figures, if you’re ready to sell your soul to be like them. Might sound harsh, but it’s also true.

Once you have confidence in your personal brand, you get to make better decisions. You can sign up for a program and learn what you need to learn, and not be swayed away from being YOU, even if that’s what they’re teaching.

There’s NOTHING more valuable than being you.

Like the great Frank Sinatra, I’m proud to say, for better or for worse, I did it my way.
