Embracing Multi-Dimensionality as Part of Your Personal Brand

I work with a lot of people who would consider themselves “multi-dimensional”. I often hear things like, “I just have so many ways I want to contribute to people, I just can’t keep my messaging clear”.

Here’s the thing. Being multi-dimensional isn’t confusing, unless you make it confusing.

Let me explain.

Definition of Multi-Dimensional

If you’ve read my blog before, you know I’m big on definitions, so let’s start with one again here. Multi-dimensional is defined as, “of or involving several dimensions or aspects.”

In my opinion, this describes the human condition.

Which means, all humans are multi-dimensional.

And not only are WE multi-dimensional, but all of our experiences are as well. I found a great clip from Lumen Learning stating that, “development occurs across one's entire life, or is lifelong. Development is multidimensional, meaning it involves the dynamic interaction of factors like physical, emotional, and psychosocial development.”

So, in essence, every single experience we have adds to our multi-dimensionality.

It’s just about whether you want to admit it or not.

Being confused by your own multi-dimensionality

When we look at ourselves, sometimes it may seem like you enjoy a whole bunch of random things. I’ll use myself as an example. I’m a personal branding coach, yes. And…a mom. And, a cardio dance teacher. And I love to bake. And I’m a retired basketball player. And I graduated with honors. And I’m a huge nerd. And a mindset junkie.

(I could go on and on, but let’s leave it at that)

If I look at all of those things and try to find a common thread based on someone else’s opinion of what they all have in common, the likelihood that I can find that is low.

The thing is, it ISN’T based on someone else’s opinion. IT’S YOU.

So, I can take a look at the same list, and simply see ME. And THAT’S what brings it all together.

Social media is an instigator of broken brands

When it comes to showing up on social media, especially on platforms like LinkedIn, which is, “made for business”, people think they can’t reveal all of this dimensionality because, “that’s not what the platform is for”.

But I’ll tell you what NO social media platform is for…showing up as PART of yourself, so when someone experiences you in REAL life, there’s a discrepancy.

Because here’s the thing…I can’t possibly show up in real life as NOT a mom (moms will get that).

So why would I try to do that on social media?

Bringing it back to YOU

You have a list similar to mine above. Even people who think they are simple, are multi-dimensional. And the better you get at finding joy in your life, the more complex your personality gets.

THIS IS A GOOD THING.

This gives your potential clients many more areas in which to connect with you. I have some clients who have never seen Star Wars (which I still think it crazy), but who connected with me on one of my other dimensions instead. AND, I was equally able to help them find clarity in their branding (although some of my references were lost on them ;) )

In Summary

Being multi-dimensional is not a hindrance to your brand. It IS your brand.

All of those dimensions come together to make the wonderful human who is you. And that wonderful human is uniquely positioned to help people in YOUR way.

Embracing multi-dimensionality in your brand is more about your ACCEPTANCE of who you are as a brand, and owning that. Luckily, this is where my expertise lies.

So, if you still think your multi-dimensionality is a distraction, let’s chat.
